Is a diamond worth a life? What about a hand? A finger…?

It is hard to believe that everybody doesn’t know that there is “stuff” going on in the world. It is easier to believe that people just don’t want to be bothered about any of it until it affects them directly. Whether it is a soldier killed overseas, a little girl raped in another state, or an animal being abused - as long as that soldier isn’t related, that little girl isn’t family, and that animal the one we hand picked from the pet store and grew up with - instances of cruelty and violence are just things that happen. Terrible yes, but still just part of life.
So if lying, cheating, deceiving, stealing, abusing, raping, exploiting and killing are just part of life - why do we get so offended by these acts? Do they violate our sense of safety and security? Is this why we endorse law and order? Is law and order a concept of convenience, meaning that it is only enforced by the powerful and impressed upon the powerless? Do the powerful abide by the same set of rules? Whose safety and security is served by the law? Is safety and security for the common man an illusion?
Too many questions, right? Sorry about that. Its just that I came across a very informative blog on a subject I have had many discussions on. After having been informed that one’s choice serves to disenfranchise another, and one continues to make that choice, what, if anything, is that person guilty of, accountable for, or responsible to?
In a world where on some levels nobody can MAKE you do the right thing, what, if anything, should the consequences be, who should enforce them, and why?
Would you pay for an item taken in a violent robbery if the victim of that robbery was your mom or dad? Your grandparent? An aunt or a cousin? A third cousin once removed?
What if the victim was your next door neighbor? The guy that lives down the block? The other side of town? In another city?
When is wrong just wrong? Sorry for babbling (smile)
Had to share this informative blog about diamonds entitled “Diamonds are Forever”.
